Zippo lighters are petrol-driven torch lighters and have been made with an almost unchanged design since 1933 in Bradford, Pennsylvania (USA). Blaisdell saw the Austrian lighter brand of "Hurricane" at a friend's place, bought the rights and developed the Zippo lighter. The Zippo lighters have the same function but can be operated with only one hand. The first Zippo lighters were sold in 1933 at a price of $1.95.
Blaisdell was so convinced of the reliability of Zippo lighters that he gave customers a lifetime warranty. The advertising slogan "It works or we fix it free" was a synonym for the reliability of the product. Repairs are still done for free at the Zippo's own workshop.
